About Smithton Primary School
Smithton Primary draws its population from the township of Smithton and surrounding rural areas. Many of our students travel considerable distances on the bus in order to attend school. A complimentary Breakfast Program operates daily. This enables all students to access a calm and healthy start to the day in addition to enjoying the opportunity to interact and be supported to practice appropriate social skills. Our School Chaplain plays a key role in meeting and greeting students. The Circular Head region has a high indigenous population; generally between 28 – 36% of our student cohort identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. This is a strong driver for our school community emphasis on relationships, partnerships and inclusion.
The current school population is trending upwards from 210 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Literacy and numeracy learning is a priority across the school. We are keenly involved in a Circular Head Cluster of state schools initiative known as the Middle Years Literacy Project which is aimed at improving student Writing outcomes. Kinder – Grade 2 staff and students are also participating in an exciting initiative known as Refocusing Teaching and Learning in the Early Years which is resulting in highly increased levels of student engagement with their learning experiences.
Specialist subjects include the Arts, Physical Education and STEM which is an interactive problem solving approach to real work issues involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. We have a large emphasis on K – 6 indoor/outdoor learning experiences which revolve around ‘workshop’ skills, the school garden, and chook and calf pens.
There are a variety of Launching into Learning Birth – 5 years programs throughout the week, all occurring within safe, supportive and stimulating settings. Programs targeting specific skills include water awareness, gross motor, language, cooperative play and Pre-Kinder sessions.
